In June, residents from the Florence Presbyterian Community set sail to North Island on the Carolina Rover. The Shelling and Lighthouse tour departed from Georgetown and traveled through Winyah Bay almost out into the Atlantic Ocean. While on the journey from port the guide divulged many historical facts and even pointed out the sight of the Civil War wreck of the Union flagship, the USS Harvest Moon. When the residents reached their final destination, North Island, they had the opportunity to disembark the 40-foot pontoon boat and search for sea shells and driftwood. After leaving the island they motored by South Carolina’s oldest lighthouse, the Georgetown Light. Built in 1811, this historic landmark lit the way for seafarers for two centuries. The view was a beautiful conclusion to a great day and an outstanding trip.
